Vision & Hope for Justice and Peace

January 11, to February 13, 2007
Maple Ridge Art Gallery

(The Maple Ridge Art Gallery is located in The ACT,
11944 Haney Place in downtown Maple Ridge)

Bert Monterona is an international award-winning painter and visual art designer from the Philippines who has exhibited his works in Asia, Australia and North America. His bark-like tapestries celebrate indigenous culture, its myths and rituals, and artistic expressions. Works made on un-stretched canvas were made to emulate and pay tribute to the materials used by his indigenous ancestors.

A special feature in this exhibit is Bert's bamboo stick artwork. A unique style of painting using indigenous textile paints and different shapes of flat bamboo sticks that act as both palette and brush will be exhibited. Bamboo painting workshops will be offered in conjunction with this exhibit.

For more information, contact the Maple Ridge Art Gallery (604) 467-5855. Art Gallery Hours: Tuesday to Friday 11:00am - 4:00pm, Saturday 10:00am - 2:30pm.

Southern Philippines Tribal Motifs, Culture and Struggle

Main Gallery
Simon Fraser University
Burnaby Campus
BC, Canada

"Works by Norberto (Bert) Monterona" is the first major exhibition that Simon Fraser Gallery has presented of artwork from the Philippines. The contemporary artwork in this exhibit is traditionally inspired but presents the viewer with a multitude of symbols and messages that push the work far beyond the tribal to that of international status. Bert's work can be enjoyed on several levels - the messages contained therein are serious and clear. His artwork not only documents cultural transitions but overlays the origins of the peoples and the history of the land providing a sequential relationship between the past and present.
